How to Collect Customer Reviews and Use Them on Your Website

A customer can be happy with a product or service without ever writing a review. People often move on with their day and forget to share their experience, even when everything went well.

For a business, customer reviews can explain what people value, answer questions from potential buyers, and give visitors a clearer idea of what to expect. To make reviews useful, establish a simple process for requesting feedback, getting permission to publish it, and displaying it in relevant places on your website.

1. Ask for a review at the right time

Timing matters. For an online store, a suitable moment may be after the customer has received and used the product. For a service business, it may be after the work is complete or once the customer has had time to assess the result.

Avoid asking for feedback before the customer has enough experience to give it. One polite message with a clear request is often more appropriate than repeated reminders.

2. Make leaving a review easy

Do not make customers complete a long questionnaire if a few sentences will do. You can share a link to the review platform you use or ask a few short questions by email or message.

For example, you could ask:

  • What problem were you trying to solve?
  • How was the service or product experience?
  • What did you find most useful?

These questions help customers provide specific feedback without telling them what to say. A review should remain honest and reflect the person’s actual experience.

3. Choose specific and useful reviews

A comment such as “Everything was great” is positive but tells a potential customer very little. A more useful review explains what the customer purchased, how the process went, or what they found valuable about the result.

Do not rewrite reviews in a way that changes their meaning or attributes promises to the customer that they never made. Minor spelling corrections can be agreed with the author, but the substance should remain accurate. If you shorten a review or remove personal details, preserve its original meaning.

4. Get permission before publishing

Receiving a private message from a customer does not automatically give you permission to publish it on your website. Ask for consent and explain where the review will appear and which details you intend to display.

Publish a person’s name, photo, job title, or company name only with the author’s permission and in accordance with applicable personal data requirements. If someone prefers not to be identified, an anonymous review should be used only when the necessary permission has been obtained and the presentation does not mislead visitors.

5. Place reviews where they are relevant

You do not need to put every review on the homepage. Display feedback where it can help visitors evaluate a specific offer:

  • on a service page, next to the service description;
  • on a product page, when the review refers to that product;
  • in a dedicated section featuring completed projects and customer experiences;
  • on the homepage, as a short selection of relevant reviews.

For example, a review about website development is more relevant on a website development service page than in a section unrelated to that service.

6. Keep reviews current and be transparent

Review your published testimonials periodically to make sure they remain relevant and any links to original sources still work. If you display a selected group of reviews, do not present it as though it represents every customer’s opinion.

Never invent customers, quotes, ratings, or results. Fake reviews can damage a business’s reputation, especially when visitors notice inconsistencies. A few detailed, genuine reviews are more useful than a large collection of generic statements.

A simple way to get started

Choose a suitable moment after a purchase or completed service, send a polite request, make it easy for the customer to respond, and obtain permission before publishing the feedback. Then place reviews where they help potential customers understand your product, service, and working process.

Reviews should not read like advertising slogans. Their value comes from real details, honest presentation, and a clear connection to the product or service being discussed.
